| "Making It in Maine: Jewish Stories from the Pine Tree State." | Join David Freidenreich for an interactive program of stories depicting Jewish experiences in Maine from the mid-nineteenth century until today. Prof. Freidenreich, a scholar of religious history researching Jewish life in Maine, will offer a framework for understanding our state’s rich Jewish history, illustrating it with anecdotes from around the state. Whether you're a native Mainer or a recent arrival from away, come prepared to contribute your own stories to this mosaic!
The Jewish Studies Program at Colby College is pleased to sponsor a series of public events to take place on campus and in communities throughout Maine during 2010 and 2011. “Telling the Stories of Maine’s Jewish History” events are supported by the Legacy Heritage Jewish Studies Project, directed by the Association for Jewish Studies. This project promotes sustained Jewish studies programming in small to mid-sized communities and seeks to foster relationships between scholars and the wider communities in which they work. |
| Second Maine Jewish History Conference | This conference will enable local researchers and scholars of American Jewish history to share information and place Maine’s Jewish history within the broader context of the American Jewish experience. Hasia Diner (author of The Jews of the United States, 1654–2000) and Lee Shai Weissbach (author of Jewish Life in Small-Town America) will deliver keynote addresses. Maine Historical Society and Documenting Maine Jewry are collaborating in the planning of this event, which builds on a conference held at Bates in October 2009 and provides a forum for all those working on Maine’s Jewish history. |
