Second List - Maine Servicemen KIA, DOW, Etc. With ‘Jewish-sounding’ Names;
but Not Confirmed as Having Been Jewish
(as of 11-13-09)

The names listed below are of servicemen killed in action or who died of wounds or other causes while in service. Confirmation is needed of their being Jewish and/or of having a Maine connection.

Most but not all of these names were taken from archival lists of Maine servicemen killed in action during World Wars 1 and 2, the Korean War and Viet Nam. They are listed here because they either look like Jewish names or might be Jews which is a very subjective judgment by the writer. Therefore, confirmation that any of these servicemen were Jewish is needed prior to their being put on a memorial plaque.

Michael Grynciewicz Portland. Killed in action and buried in France in WWI. Born in Vilna. Jewish? Spelling? (“Gryn” is Polish spelling of what would be “Grun” with umlaut or “Gruen” in transliterated Yiddish or “Green” in English.)
Joseph Kain Johnsville, New Brunswick. Enlisted Maine. KIA WW1. October, 1918. Buried Meuse- Argonne American Cemetery, France. (Gary Davis is researching this in Canada.] “Kain” derived from “Cohen?”
Albert Kushnir Lewiston, Androscoggin County. KIA, WW2
John Lakin Aroostook County. KIA, Korea. Served WW2. Born 1923, Massachusetts. Enlisted Portland, June 1941. Listed as no religion specified.
John L. Levine Mexico, Oxford County World War I (A Levine was among the founders of the Waterville Synagogue, but THIS Levine is not known to be related. checking old Oxford County newspaper obituaries.) Born circa 1896-1899.
Leonard Robbins Lincoln County Enlisted, 1939, before Pearl Harbor. Enlistment papers not accurate. Possible Bataan Death March. No religion specified in records. Shown as having postgraduate education. Birth date shown as “1855.” Ridiculous!
John Sabol Anson, Somerset County KIA, World War 1 (I have known Jewish Sabols.) KIA October 1918. Buried Meuse-Argonne Cemetery, France. No enlistment papers found.
Harry H. Sherman Calais WW1. (A Jewish Sherman family was reported as having lived in Calais during that period.) b. Tower Hill, N.B.
Joseph P. Tan(m)kovich (Portland), Cumberland County. KIA, World War 1 Killed and buried in France. No enlistment records found.
